Roundcube can automatically check for new emails at a configurable interval. By default, the refresh interval is typically set to 5 or 10 minutes. You can change this to every minute if you need near real-time notifications for incoming mail.
How to Set Auto-Refresh to Every Minute
- Log in to Roundcube Webmail.
- Click the Settings icon (gear ⚙️) in the top-right corner.
- In the left sidebar, click Preferences.
- Click User Interface.
- Find the Refresh interval or Check for new messages dropdown.
- Select Every minute from the available options.
- Click Save at the bottom of the page.
- Roundcube will now check for new mail every 60 seconds.
Important Notes
- A 1-minute refresh interval is the shortest available option in most Roundcube installations.
- More frequent refreshes increase server load and bandwidth usage. On shared hosting, this is generally fine for individual accounts. If you manage many users, consider leaving the default interval.
- This setting is per-user — each email account holder can set their own interval.
- If the 1-minute option is not available, your server administrator has set a higher minimum interval to reduce server load.
- The refresh only works while the Roundcube tab is open in your browser. Closing the tab stops automatic checking.
Troubleshooting
- Setting does not persist after closing the browser: Roundcube saves preferences in browser cookies. If your browser is set to clear cookies on exit, the setting will be lost. Either disable cookie clearing for the webmail domain, or bookmark the login page and reconfigure each session.
- Inbox not refreshing automatically: Ensure your browser allows JavaScript and is not blocking background requests. Check for extensions like ad blockers, privacy tools, or battery savers that may throttle or block background network requests in inactive tabs.
- "Every minute" option is not in the dropdown: Your hosting provider has restricted the minimum interval. Contact support to request the minimum be lowered.
- Roundcube becomes slow or unresponsive: Frequent refreshes can be heavy on large mailboxes with thousands of emails. Try archiving old emails to reduce mailbox size, or switch to a longer refresh interval like 5 minutes.
- Mobile battery drains quickly: 1-minute refresh keeps a persistent connection to the server. On mobile devices, consider using a longer interval (5 minutes) or closing the webmail tab when not in use.
