An email alias is an additional email address that delivers messages to an existing mailbox. For example, you could create [email protected] as an alias for [email protected] — any email sent to the alias arrives in the main mailbox. This guide shows you how to create and manage email aliases in Plesk.
When to use an alias vs. a separate mailbox
- Use an alias when you want multiple addresses to deliver to the same inbox. Common examples: sales@, support@, hello@ all pointing to your main email account.
- Use a separate mailbox when the address needs its own inbox, storage, and login credentials.
Aliases do not have their own mailbox, password, or storage — they are simply alternative addresses for an existing account.
Creating an email alias
- Log in to Plesk.
- Go to Mail and click the email address you want to add an alias to.
- Click the Email Aliases tab.
- In the Email alias field, type the alias address (just the part before the @).
- To add more aliases, click Add email alias and enter each one.
- Click OK to save.
Messages sent to any of the alias addresses will now appear in the main mailbox.
Removing an email alias
- Go to Mail and click the email address that has the alias.
- Click the Email Aliases tab.
- Click the Remove link next to the alias you want to delete.
Alias vs. forwarding
Aliases and mail forwarding both redirect email, but they work differently:
- Alias: delivers to the same mailbox on the same domain. No separate account needed.
- Forwarding: sends a copy of incoming mail to a different email address, which can be on an external domain (e.g. Gmail). You set up forwarding under the Forwarding tab of the email account.
Verifying your alias works
After creating the alias, send a test email to the alias address from an external account. Check that the message appears in the primary mailbox. Reply to the test email to confirm outbound mail works as expected.
Important notes
- Aliases are included in your hosting plan's email allocation — check your plan limits if you create many aliases.
- When you reply to an email received via an alias, the reply is sent from the primary mailbox address unless your email client is configured to use the alias as a sender identity.
- Aliases work alongside spam filtering — messages are filtered before being delivered to the mailbox.
- You can create multiple aliases for a single mailbox.
