If you need to update your email account password for security reasons, or if you have forgotten the current password, you can easily change it directly from your cPanel dashboard. This guide walks you through the process step by step.
Changing Your Password via Email Accounts
- Log in to your cPanel account.
- Scroll to the Email section and click on Email Accounts.
- Locate the email address for which you want to change the password.
- Click the Manage button next to the email address.
- Scroll down to the Security section.
- Enter your new password in the New Password field, or click Generate to create a strong, random password.
- If you entered a custom password, cPanel will display a password strength indicator. Aim for a strength rating of at least 60 (Moderate) or higher.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Update Email Settings.
- A confirmation message will appear at the top of the page confirming the password has been changed.
Changing Your Password via User Manager
You can also change an email password using the User Manager interface:
- Log in to cPanel.
- Scroll to the Preferences section and click User Manager.
- Find the email address you wish to update. Use the search or filter options if needed.
- Click the Edit link next to the email address.
- Enter the new password in the Security Information field.
- Click Save at the bottom of the page.
Password Requirements
cPanel enforces the following password requirements:
- Minimum 8 characters in length.
- Must contain at least one uppercase letter and one lowercase letter.
- Must contain at least one number.
- Cannot contain spaces or the characters:
,&,+,",'.
Important Notes
- After changing your password, you will need to update it on all devices that use this email account (phone, email client, webmail).
- If you use an email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail), you will be prompted to enter the new password on your next send/receive.
- If you generated a password, make sure to copy and store it in a safe place before leaving the page.
- The User Manager method works even if you have forgotten the current password.

Password change not saving?
- Ensure your new password meets the minimum strength requirements shown by the indicator.
- Clear your browser cache and try again.
- Contact your hosting provider if the issue persists.
Cannot log in to webmail after changing password?
- Wait a few minutes for the change to propagate across the server.
- Clear your browser cookies and cache, then try logging in again.
- Make sure you are using the full email address as the username.
Email client keeps rejecting the password?
- Remove the email account from your email client and re-add it with the new password.
- Check that your email client is configured to use the correct mail server settings.
