If you no longer need an email address, you can either delete it permanently or suspend it temporarily. Deleting an account removes all stored emails and cannot be undone. Suspending an account disables login and mail delivery but keeps all data intact. This guide explains both options.
Deleting an Email Account
Warning: Deleting an email account permanently removes all emails, contacts, and settings. This action cannot be undone. Make sure to back up any important emails before proceeding.
- Log in to your cPanel account.
- Scroll to the Email section and click Email Accounts.
- Find the email address you want to delete.
- Click Manage next to the email address.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Delete Email Account.
- A confirmation prompt will appear. Click Delete to confirm.
Suspending an Email Account
Suspending an account disables it without deleting any data. The email address will stop receiving new mail and the user will not be able to log in, but all existing emails and settings are preserved.
- Log in to your cPanel account.
- Scroll to the Email section and click Email Accounts.
- Find the email address you want to suspend.
- Click Manage next to the email address.
- Under the account status section, click Suspend.
- The account status will change to Suspended.
Unsuspending an Email Account
- Log in to cPanel.
- Go to Email → Email Accounts.
- Find the suspended email address.
- Click Manage.
- Click Unsuspend.
- The account will become active again and will resume receiving mail.
Delete vs Suspend — Which Should You Choose?
- Delete: Use when you no longer need the email address at all. The mailbox and all its contents are permanently removed.
- Suspend: Use when you need to temporarily disable an account (e.g., for an employee who is leaving and may return, or while investigating a security concern). All data is preserved and the account can be reactivated at any time.
Important Notes
- When you delete an email account, any forwarders, filters, and auto-responders associated with that address are also removed.
- If the deleted email address was set as the default (catch-all) address, incoming mail to non-existent addresses will no longer be routed.
- Suspended accounts do not count toward your cPanel email account limit (varies by hosting plan).
- You cannot delete the default cPanel account email (the one matching your cPanel username).
Troubleshooting
"Delete Email Account" button is not visible:
- You may not have permission to delete this account. Contact your hosting provider if you believe this is an error.
- The default cPanel account email cannot be deleted.
Suspended account is still receiving emails:
- Allow a few minutes for the suspension to take effect across the server.
- Check if any forwarders are still active for that email address, as forwarders operate independently of the mailbox.
Cannot unsuspend an account:
- Ensure the cPanel account has not exceeded its disk quota.
- Contact your hosting provider if the unsuspend button does not work.
